Wildlife Photojournalist and Biologist

Upamanyu Chakraborty is a wildlife biologist and photojournalist. He has been closely working with various national parks across India.

Upamanyu has been a Research Biologist for AITE (All India Tiger Estimation) at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun. He has also been associated with the Nature and Wildlife Association-India (NWA-India).

Work Experience:


  • Polygon Search and Opportunistic Camera Trapping Method for Tiger and Co-predator Estimation in rugged terrain of Kamlang Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh and scheduled areas like Karbi Anglong district in Assam in expedition mode.
  • Spatially explicit Capture Recapture in Balaghat territorial area, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Line transect and Random Encounter Model Implementation in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve for ungulate population estimation.
  • SECR in territorial forests in Shahdol, Umaria and Anuppur districts of Central India.
  • Landscape and Studied Corridors for Metapopulation between Bandhavgarh and Dubri Tiger Reserve to ensure better conservation model.
  • Line Transect, REM and SECR in two blocks (covered over thousand square kilometres including Corbett National Park and Sona Nadi Wildlife Sanctuary).
  • Management and coordination with Forest Department to run surveys in respective study areas.
  • Data handling and data arrangement.
  • Providing training to forest officials for camera trapping using patrolling app.
  • Working in North Bengal landscape in a habitat restoration project and Human-Elephant conflict management.
  • Participated in Asian Waterfowl Census 2017, 2020 and 2021 at Gajoldoba, Fulbari wetlands, Rasikbeel (Coochbehar) and Nararthali Beel (Buxa Tiger Reserve).
  • Participated in Birdwatching Camps at Chilapata forest, Gorumara National Park, Buxa Tiger Reserve and Neora Valley National Park with Department of Forests, West Bengal and HNAF.
