Ruma Devi : The inspiration behind "Sui Dhaaga"!

RUMA DEVI From a poor family to becoming a great fashionista worldwide. Ruma Devi was born in 1989 in a small village Barmer, Rajasthan. She is the eldest of all the 7 sisters. Her mother died when she was 5 years old and due to the family's financial issues she discontinued school in her 8th grade. After her mother died, her father remarried and so she was raised by her paternal uncle and aunt. She got married at a very early age of 16 and gave birth to a baby boy in the year 2012. Since they did not have financial support, her son was not given proper medications and so he died when was one and a half years old. Due to her financial issues, Ruma Devi decided to do work for income. Her grandmother taught her embroidery and sewing when she was young. So she started to make cushions, clothes and bags with the help of a social activists Vikram Singh. At the beginning she had a group of 10 women with her to work from whom she collected rs.100 and bought a new sweing maching. As the years passed on, more women joined her to work and from 10 it has increased to 22000 women. In 1998, she started a self-help group named Gramin Vikas and Chetna Sansthan in her own village. She is the president of this group. The motive of this group is to bring out the women empowerment. All the women in this group are well trained in embroidery, kantha stitch, patchwork and other fabric paintings. She was asked to join in many international fashion weeks but she refused because of the low confidence in herself. Later, she had displayed her works at the fashion weeks held in London, Germany, Colombo and Singapore. In 2018, she won the most prestigious highest civilian honour for women in India award Nari Shakthi Puraskar from the President. She was featured on the cover in India Today Magazine in 2018. Similar to her life story was made into a bollywood movie Sui Dhaaga in 2018 casted by Anushka Sharma and Varun Dhawan. She was seen playing Amitabh Bachan's Kaun Baneega Crorepatti 11 with bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha in 2019 and bagged 12,50,000. Ruma Devi after all her stress and diasters in her life she achieved all the high levels and now she is an inspiration to many women not only in her village but in whole India.
