MOVIES BASED ON BANARAS Banaras is considered to be one of the holiest places in India. It is situated in the Northern State of Uttar Pradesh. Many filmmakers attempted to bring out the facts of this beautiful place but not all won it. Only few filmmakers succeeded the attempt. Some of the best movies that are based on Banaras are. 1. MASAAN : Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, this movie was released on 24th July 2015. This is his debut film and he chose Banaras. He brings out that Banaras is not only a place to live in but an emotion too. The film had made India proud in many film festivals. 2. ANGREZI MEIN KEHTE HAI : Directed and written by Garish Vyas. The film is all about a middle-aged couple living in Banaras. The story is a very heart touching and emotional one. This film was played in both national and international film fest. 3. MUKTI BHAWAN : Directed and written by Shubhashish Bhutiani, was released in 2016. The film is about a dying man who wishes to live his last days in Banaras. His son accompany him to the holy city. The film has comedy too in some scenes to make the film more interesting. 4. MOHALLA ASSI : Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, released on 16th November 2018. The film is based on a Sanskrit teacher and his wife and is totally in a 80's to 90's time. There was a problem with the censor for releasing the movie but still the movie was released and it got a big applaud from the public. The whole film was shot on the ghats of Varanasi. 5. WATER : Directed and written by Deepa Mehta,released on 9th September 2005. The plot of the film is about a widow in Varanasi. It was allowed to be released in big screens for a long time. Oncethe film was released, everyone appreciated the concept and work of the director. 6. BANARAS : Directed by Pankaj Parashar, released on 7th April 2006. As the name itself says that it is all based on Banaras. The story is about caste where the upper caste girl falls in love with a lower caste boy and the struggles ey face from the society. Casteism is one of the major problems in Indian Society and is still going on in some villages and cities too. 7. LAAGA CHUNARI MEIN DAAG : Directed by Pradeep Sarkar under Yash Raj Banner, was released on 12th October 2007. The story is about a young girl from a poor family in Banaras goes to Mumbai to work. But finally she ends up becoming an escort. The film shows the difficulties that the family face without money. First half of the movie WS fully shot in Varanasi.
