Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary is located on the outskirts of Kolkata near Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission which is situated in South 24 Parganas. It is also called ‘Kayal-r-Bagan’ by the locals. The ‘Kayal-r-Bagan’ was a name given to the park after Chinatamoni Kar, a renowned sculptor, coined it and fought for it to give this park a special status. He has even won civilian awards from the Indian and French governments and also won an Olympic silver medal on behalf of Great Britain. The park covers an area of 17 acres in total. The park houses a large variety of birds, spiders, butterflies and more. The park also consists of a lot of trees including Mango, Banyan, Tamarind, Guava, Coconut.etc some of which are more than a hundred years old. The entry and usage of plastic in this park is prohibited. It is open from 7am daily upto 5 pm in the evenings. The park gives a wholesome nature experience for its visitors by calming their mind with its surroundings and providing a good view of birds. The park was announced as a sanctuary in the year 1982 and the government made it a complete natural reserve after it received all the lands inside the park owned by private organisations and people in October 2005.
