More About Yoga and Fitness
Yoga is an ancient Indian discipline that involves the mind, body, and spirit.
The basic tenet of yoga is to activate all the different parts of the body and the mind to harmonise your spirit. This is done through a yoga flow which involves various asanas or yoga poses followed by a meditation or pranayama segment. This section asks the individual to focus on their breathing pattern and thus achieve peace by being in the present moment and not letting their mind wander.
This harmonisation of mind, body, and soul is difficult to achieve. You will often find yogis and yoginis practising for years before they feel ready to attempt the same. However, the average person can benefit greatly from this practice of yoga and pranayama due to their many health benefits – mental and physical.
Due to this, yoga can be performed by anyone, from adults to kids! There are also specific asanas for pregnant women depending on the trimester they are in.
Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation is one of the most common yoga flows. As the name suggests, this flow is all about bowing to the greatness of the sun or Surya (god). Thus, the best time to do a Surya Namaskar is during sunrise. However, it is recommended that beginners start by doing the Surya Namaskar in the evening instead as our muscles and joints are much more relaxed and open then.
Ideally, Surya Namaskar is done outside where you can feel the sun rays and connect to the environment around you, leading to the connection of the spirit and mind.
The Surya Namskar is made up of 12 asanas or poses and provides the benefits of 288 poses. It is ideal for anyone who wishes for an intense workout in a short period of time. These 12 asanas are represented by a mantra, each mantra corresponding to a different sun or zodiac sign.
The Surya Namaskar has many health benefits of its own. Due to the progressive nature of yoga, it is one of the most diverse yoga flows available as individuals can tailor the asanas according to their physical limits. By engaging all the different parts of your body, it increases circulation, regulates your breathing, releases stress and tension from the body, and stimulates the central nervous system. It also helps calm you down while simultaneously helping you get ready for the day.
Types of Yoga
There are many different forms of yoga and each can be radically different from the other. We have outlined some of the most commonly used forms below.
This is the general category of yoga which includes both asanas and pranayama. Due to this, it is ideal for beginners or anyone who wants a slow, relaxed class where poses are held for longer.
This class is mainly focused on the yoga flow and will often feature moving quickly through Surya Namaskars.
This form of yoga is concerned with yoga as physical activity. The classes are vigorous, fast-paced, and physically challenging.
This type of yoga was formed to make ashtanga yoga more accessible to Western students.
This is a class held in hot and humid environments to encourage sweating. A common form of Hot Yoga is Bikram Yoga, where classes are exactly the same all over the globe.
This form of yoga pays particular attention to alignment and the intricacies within each asana. Due to this, poses are held for longer periods of time and the classes will often feature the use of props such as belts, blocks, blankets, and chairs.
This form is characterised by the repetition of movement, focus on breathing, and chanting of mantras. Each exercise or kriya is repeated often and synchronized with the breath.
Benefits of Yoga
Yoga can be used to help with a myriad of physical problems such as accumulation of stress, tense muscles, back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, and for increasing your strength and flexibility. It can also be used to heal and help internal physical problems such as thyroid issues, PCOS/PCOD, and constipation. Another advantage of regularly doing yoga is that it aligns your spine, giving you that perfect, enviable posture.
Similarly, as an exercise program, it can also be used to facilitate weight loss and weight gain.
Yoga can also be used to help with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, loss of appetite, sleep issues, disordered eating, and mood regulation. This helps with increasing your self-esteem, calming your mind – which has a direct and positive effect on your relationships, controlling your temper, and giving you inner strength to make you more resilient to life’s challenges.
International Yoga Day
International Yoga Day is celebrated annually on June 21. This is a recent development, as it was only in 2014 that Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested this date to the United Nations General Assembly as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
This day is celebrated all over the world due to the popularity of yoga as both a strictly physical activity and its meditative component.
This popularity also means that you will often find yoga studios and professional yogis conducting online sessions, free sessions, or offering sessions at a highly discounted rate.
